{"id":11637,"date":"2023-06-29T05:29:59","date_gmt":"2023-06-29T09:29:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.routineproceedings.com\/?p=11637"},"modified":"2023-06-29T00:19:16","modified_gmt":"2023-06-29T04:19:16","slug":"roundup-no-its-not-another-carbon-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.routineproceedings.com\/2023\/06\/29\/roundup-no-its-not-another-carbon-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"Roundup: No, it’s not another carbon tax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pierre Poilievre is currently on a tour of Atlantic Canada, braying about the increase in the carbon price, and the incoming clean fuel standard regulations, which he has mendaciously dubbed \u201cCarbon Tax 2.\u201d Poilievre claims will be a combined hike of 61 cents per litre of gasoline. He\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal\/2023\/06\/28\/pierre-poilievre-says-canadians-will-pay-way-more-for-gas-the-trudeau-government-says-not-so-fast.html\">wrong<\/a>\u2014the figure comes from future carbon price increases plus a dubious Parliamentary Budget Officer report on the clean fuel standard pricing effects, which were based on a lot of assumptions that may not happen, and the figure from that report that Poilievre is citing was an estimated price effect from 2030, which again, he falsely implies is coming right away.<\/p>\n<p>While I\u2019m not going to say much more, because I will probably write about this later in the week in a more comprehensive way, it was noted that a columnist at our supposed national paper of record not only fully bought into Poilievre\u2019s bullshit, but he couldn\u2019t even be bothered to check his facts on these prices. Here\u2019s energy economist Andrew Leach setting the record straight:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This morning's <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/camrclark?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@camrclark<\/a> column confounds the federal carbon price and the Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) in ways that aren't helpful. First, the carbon price isn't going up July 1, the Clean Fuel Regs are coming into effect that day. Those regulations had credits, trading, and costs that would pass through to consumers.
