Roundup: Listing invaders as terrorists?

In the aftermath of Wednesday’s assault on Capitol Hill, Canadian officials have been trying to give some assurances that it couldn’t happen here, and that our own intelligence officials are on the ball when it comes to these right-wing extremists. Which is good to know. Meanwhile, certain leaders are demanding that the Proud Boys be declared a terrorist organisation for their role in Wednesday’s attack, so here’s former CSIS analyst Jessica Davis to explain what that would entail and what it would mean.

Good reads:

  • Justin Trudeau says that it’s unfortunately “predictable” that China is blocking WHO investigators who are trying to get accountability on the early days of the pandemic.
  • Premiers are trying to distract from their slow rollout of vaccines by insisting they’re not getting more doses fast enough, which is Trudeau’s fault (of course).
  • Mary Ng is pushing back against ongoing American tariffs on Canadian solar products, which violate the New NAFTA.
  • Ralph Goodale says that Iranian government is offering $150,000 per victim in compensation for the downing of PS572, but negotiations have not even begun yet.
  • Maclean’s has an interview with former House of Commons Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers about the invasion of Capitol Hill and the balance with proper security.
  • Conservative deputy leader Candice Bergen won’t explain the photos circulating of her wearing a MAGA hat.
  • Here’s a look at how Alberta encouraged people to travel to Hawaii, only for several of their ministers to take advantage of it.
  • Paul Wells reflects on the current trend of shaming travelling politicians that everyone is so caught up in that they’re thinking their criticisms through.

Odds and ends:

I was on the Hill Times’ Hot Room podcast to talk about the political year ahead.

  1. If the PBs are going to be investigated, then the CPC and provincial offshoots need to come under the same inquiry for their connections to Proud Canada and Rebel Media. You cannot examine their origins without acknowledging their roots at Rebel or where Rebel came from, which is Sun Media. Postmedia gobbled up part of them and part of Canwest/Global. Who runs Postmedia? A GOP-affiliated American hedge fund. It’s an unavoidable conclusion at this point that Canada’s propaganda press is planting the seeds of terrorism. Wasn’t it Pigeon Poilievre who made some inane statement years ago about the root causes of root causes? Start with his merry band of “old-stock” hatemongers and work outwards to Jeff Ballingall and Conman Black, and ultimately the IDU. With the Competition Bureau’s farcical investigation into ToryStar (Izvestia) and Postmedia (Pravda) coming up empty, it’s time for a full-scale Murdoch Inquiry. They don’t get to wash their hands of this. Trump *is* conservatism writ large and sadly, he’s got a lot more than just his grandfather’s house of ill repute bolstering his prospects up north.
