Roundup: The Economist Party fact-checks

With the Liberals casting the NDP federal minimum wage proposal as a mirage, and the NDP insisting that they haven’t deceived anyone (never mind that the Huffington Post did a piece asking ordinary people about what they thought of the pledge, only to learn it applies to federally-regulated industries, which won’t affect most people, and lo and behold, the people asked felt deceived. Imagine that!) While the NDP claim it will affect over 100,000 people, the Economist Party crunched the numbers, and found them lacking.

On the campaign:

  • Justin Trudeau was the only leader campaigning on Saturday, while he attended Montreal Pride on Sunday along with releasing an open letter to the PM about the Duffy affair.
  • Stephen Harper was in Ottawa Sunday to reiterate his plans to add fuel to the housing bubble, and calling questions about the Duffy trial “absurd.”
  • Thomas Mulcair also attended Montreal Pride and said it’s not enough for the PM to fire his chief of staff over Duffy revelations, but that the PM should be fired.

Good reads:

  • Senators – particularly Senate Liberals – are adjusting to new roles in this campaign.
  • Two months later, the Senate Ethics Officer has not had a conversation with the young woman who allegedly had a relationship with Senator Meredith.
  • John Geddes fact-checks the status of those who were withdrawing from their RRSPs to make a down payment on their homes under the existing limits.
  • Here’s a look at the pay and access to resources for the three un-suspended senators. (Hint: Only Wallin is fully in the clear).
  • Former finance officials Scott Clark and Peter DeVries lament that none of the three main parties have a credible long-term growth strategy. This is an important read.

Odds and ends:

NDP MP José Nunez-Melo, who lost his nomination bid, is now going to run for the Green Party.

A pre-election stop in Central Nova two months ago by the PM cost the treasury over $40,000.

Apparently the Harper children are getting their own fan base. Who knew?

Here’s another Economist Party fact-check, on the Green Party platform:
